Green Mussels

These mussels grow easily over the plastic barrels, which is used to support the floating of fish cages.

Keuy Chap

Once I tasted the Duck Meat Keuh Chap, seriously, I can feel the duck flavor was filling up all of my mouth.

Funny Mountain Tau Fu Fah (Soy Bean Curd)

The soybean curd was silky smooth, yet almost melt in mouth~ Simply satisfy our taste buds! Rm0.80 per bowl, cheap enough!

Kong Heng Rstaurant Chicken Satay

There is a speciality of way they serve satay. An uncle will look around and keep refill the satay. Well, it is not like McDonald, these satay are not free. LOL~

Funny Mountain Soy Bean Foods in Ipoh

It is frequent for a Kedah guy to travel back home during holiday. Quick stop over Tapah Rest Service Area (RSA) along PLUS Highway seems becoming a necessary stop for me to take a refreshment and buy some fruits!

Accordingly to Wikipedia, Tapah is the administrative town of the district Batang Padang, Perak, Malaysia (with coordinates: 4.20°N 101.26°E). The name is said to be originated from the name of a fresh water fish, "Ikan Tapah" (Wallago attu).

Apart of the recommended Kong Heng Restaurant Foods in Perak, this Funny Mountain Soy Bean Drink and Tau Fu Fah (Soy Bean curd) is recommended. It is located opposite of Perfect Ice fresh fruit sherbet and Sin Tat Seng salted chicken.

The difference between Funny Mountain with the other soybean stall is their Drive-Thru Service. LOL! No joking, you can choose either take away or "Drink n Go"~ Just like photo below, people aren't parking there, they are buying Funny Mountain soybean drink!

The business starts everyday from 10.30am until sold out for the day, except Tuesday. Typically on weekend, the queue can be overwhelming~ So it’s best to come as early as possible~

They serve 3 soybean foods, which is Soya Bean Drink, Grass Jelly (Cincau) and Soya Bean Curd (Tau Fu Fa). You can mix the Soy Bean Drink with either one.

We ordered Soy Bean Drink mixed with Soy Bean curd only (due to the fault of Kong Heng Restaurant foods. Haha! =P). The soybean curd was silky smooth, yet almost melt in mouth~ Simply satisfy our taste buds! It was also a good refreshment especially during the hot day! Rm0.80 per bowl, cheap enough! However, the portion is quite small, suitable for tasting only. You may order 2 bowls to fulfil your desire~

A definite place to go when you are craving tau fu fah around Perak.

Kong Heng Restaurant Foods in Ipoh

Kong Heng Restaurant, a very popular restaurant in the old town area of Ipoh located beside the Thean Chun Restaurant. They serve variety of foods such as chee cheong fan, hor fun (shredded chicken noddle soup), bean sprout with chicken, popiah, rojak and others. People come all over always hunt for these good foods! Seriously good~

The first recommended food of Kong Heng Restaurant is this - Shredded Chicken Noodle Soup (Kai Si Hor Fun). Wow wow wow~ When I took the first bite, the soup was so flavourful and fragrant. Just simply like all the chicken running into my mouth~ The noodles are soft too~ Sluuuurrrrrrrrrrp!

Apart of their hor fun, satay are worth of trying! Pork and Chicken satay are served, but we have chosen the chicken satay. The meat are tender and springy enough. With the satay sauce, it makes the satay more tasty. The roasted peanut aroma with the slight sweetness was so great~
*There is a speciality of way they serve satay. An uncle will look around and keep refill the satay. Well, it is not like McDonald, these satay are not free. LOL~

Fruits (pineapple, cucumber, etc) and crackers were served with Rojak sauce, which is more likely sweet and spicy.
There are two types of Chee Cheong Fan, which is sweet sauce (red) and curry sauce (orange). The noodles are good, but I don't really know to appreciate them.

Overall, this Kong Heng Restaurant foods was good! You may pay a visit when pass by Perak.

Ivy's Kitchen Foods in Penang

Ivy's Kitchen, located at Chow Thye Road has made a beautiful ending of our Penang 3 Days 2 Night Foods Hunting. This restaurant is one of must visit Nyonya Foods in Penang.
Apart of authentic Nyonya foods, their do serve a variety of Nasi Lemak (coconut rice), noodles and some home cooked food. We have ordered 4 types Nasi Lemak with some signature side dishes. The emphasis of different Nasi Lemak was the chicken/fish and all of them are served with almost same side ingredients. Each of the Nasi Lemak shared almost same side dishes

As you can see in the photo, this Nasi Lemak combo set made of coconut rice, fried chicken, fish cracker, peanuts, fried anchovies, cucumbers, hard boiled egg, and gravy sauce with anchovies. It looks normal, but taste good.

Curry Chicken Nasi Lemak is my most favourite Nasi Lemak among the others. Juicy, tender chicken meat with the flavourful sauce was a great combination. Pickles are served too. Finger licking good~

Rendang Chicken Nasi Lemak. Another recommended choice of Nasi Lemak.

For me, this Assam Prawn was certainly one of the food highlights of the day. It was springy, savory and good tasting! According to the owner and my personal experience, the Penang Nyonya foods are different with the Melaka in terms of variety of Nyonya foods and taste due to the regional. Penang Nyonya foods are more to sweet and sour due to Thailand influence, while Melaka more to spicy and "coconut" influenced by Indonesian.

Sambal stuffed hard tail mackerel was our majority voted foods! The fried fish was very crispy and fragrant with the sambal filling. It is something really pleasant to the sense of taste! It might be a little bit spicy for some people, but it is just to my liking! Kedah people what~ Haha! =P

From left to right is the Stingray Fish in Gulai Tumis Assam, Chicken Loh Bak and Joo Hoo Char. Joo Hoo Char is a traditional Nyonya mixed vegetables served with fresh lettuce, which my mum used to "encourage" me to eat more vegetables during childhood~ The Gulai Tumis Assam was sour and appetizing!

Group photo while waiting for tasty foods~

Chin Bee Tea Restaurant Foods in Penang

I am lucky I have the chance to visit Chin Bee Tea Restaurant, a Chinese tea and cuisine restaurant that located at Lebuh Noordin, Penang. Apart of tea, you should try on their scrumptious foods.

I have tasted the Bu Er and Ginseng Tie Kuan Yin. Personally recommend their Ginseng Tie Kuan Yin, which has a sweet aftertaste. Heavenly good.

My most favourite food - Iron Net Golden Dragon! It was made of salted duck egg, prawn, pork, lard and other ingredients. This Iron Net Golden Dragon was so flavourful, due to the lard and salted duck egg. The crust was crispy and delicious.

Kam Hiang Fish Fillet - The majority voted food. The fresh fish fillet, cooked with lots of vegetables, had a soft texture and consistency of sweet and flavorful sauce. Big thumbs up!

Golden Egg, a very soft and appealing egg custard. It melted in my mouth with balanced sweetness, indulging fragrant, smooth and luscious on the tongue!!!

Another signature dish of Chin Bee Tea Restaurant. Definitely, the tenderness of meat, taste and flavor will tell you the quality of chefs! As the other dishes, this pork ribs won't be long enough to stay over the table.

Gui Hua Noodles - deep fried noodles cooked with prawns, eggs and sliced lettuce~ A little bit dry, but it is simply good.

Thanks to the owner, Sifu Malai Chong (50 years+ of cooking experiences) and Criz for introducing us this hidden gem in Penang! You can check the other dishes at Chin Bee Tea Cafe by Criz Bon Appetite

Hawker Foods and Restaurant in Penang

Special thanks to CRIZ BON APPETITE for inviting us to join the Penang Hawker Foods & Restaurant Hunting Trip together with the KL Berjaya group student chefs and also hosted Steven and my accommodation. Some of our foods hunting is around George Town, which is recognised by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as World Heritage Site (a place has special cultural or physical significance). During our 3 days 2 night, we manage to explore following foods:

1. Kimberly Street

Duck Meat Keuy Chap

The Keuy Chap is served with either rice sheets (keuy) or   rice (in porridge form). I have omitted the duck blood and organs/visceral. Once I tasted the Duck Meat Keuh Chap, seriously, I can felt the duck flavor was filling up all of my mouth. The taste was so irresistible and I kept telling Criz that I will miss this so much.

Open: 6.30pm-midnight.
Close: Thursdays except if it's a public holiday.
Price: RM 6.00

I am not a fan of Braised Chicken Feet, but it is still okay for me to try on it.  The chicken feet here has a softer texture compared with the one I tried before. It was juicy and full of flavor from the sauce. It is worth of a try! =D
The Peanut Tong Sui is served with sliced YouTiao (Chinese Bread Sticks). This tong sui (dessert) is common during funeral in some Chinese places. The YouTiao are very crunchy (a little bit hard). I would prefer if it is more crispy. However, the taste was good and it is different when you eat the YouTiao with  peanut tong sui

2. Magazine Road

I recommend you to have a try on Hoe Hock Tien Tang Yen whenever you are around the Magazine Road. The stalls are located opposite of Traders Hotel, before the De Shang Lounge KTV Nite. You can search more about them at their blogfan page or contact Micheal (016-477 7764).

The small Tang Yen are very soft, while the big is filled with either peanut or black sesame. I have eaten the peanut and it was good!!! The soup was a little bit spicy but it just good enough to my liking. I do not know much about ginger, but according to the owner, the ginger used are good quality which was harvested in somewhere hills.

3. Breakfast at Gelugor & Chowrasta Market
The Curry Mee with six prawns, scoop of clams, squid, and vegetables cost only RM4!!!Do you believe it?! Haha! The soup was mild in curry taste and others are okay.
There is a speciality of the Chee Cheong Fan, where the sauce made of Peanut Butter. The taste are much more sweeter and fragrant. It is recommended that to share this food with your friends, otherwise you might feel "full".
The wantan mee is different from what I eaten before. The mee is fried before mixed with the sauce. Well, the texture is different. It is crunchy and tasty~
The forth and the fifth is Peanut biscuit and soybean drink respectively.

4. Visitation to Hock Lok Siew Biscuit Manufacturing, Lebuh Noordin, Penang

4. Chin Bee Tea Restaurant
Will blog this in next post.

5. Assam Laksa & Lemak Laksa & Char Koay Teow at Sin Hwa Café, Pulau Tikus, Penang

The Sin Hwa Cafe is renowned with their Assam Laksa! You can know more about it at 10 of the best cheap eats in Penang We have been served three types of laksa, which are assam, lemak and mixed. The Assam Laksa sweeter, the Laksa Lemak more sour (with pineapple). Special thanks to Ken for sponsoring us the Apong. It costs 30 minutes waiting time by Ken! The Apong is succulent and surely more than palatable~

6. Zi Zai Restaurant, Paya Terubong, Penang
The abalone are so white~~~ Haha! We have ordered the Poon Choi, fried belacan chicken, assam prawn, lala and vegetable. The Poon Choi should be good, but sadly accident happened. The chicken was a little bit salty for me, maybe due to the crust covering it. Overall is okay nia...

7. 43 Cafe, Sungai Dua, Penang

This is my first time tasting on pork burger. This pork burget made of butter toasted bun, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and cheese. I love the pork patties. It is flavorful and juicy~ Yummy.

My most recommended food at 43 Cafe is the Ribena Ice Cream. Oh no, I am still craving for this now! It is not easy to describe the taste. This Ribena ice cream has a mild ribena flavor, however, the taste is sweet, milky and little bit salty. We were guessing Jacgy (the owner) used cream cheese in this, but we are wrong. Haha! The ice cream cost rm6 per cup, but I bet you it is worth to try! =)

8. Malaysian delicacies & I Mum Mum Pan Mee, Lebuh Macallum, Penang

1. Cherry coconut tart (someone favourite dessert) =P
2. Ma Lai Kuih - spongy with coffee flavor.
3. La Jiao (spicy) Ban Mian
4. Jiao Zhi

9. Ivy’s Kitchen, Penang Authentic Nyonya Cuisine
Will blog this in next post.

In this 3 days 2 night food hunting in Penang, we have successfully eaten 40+ different foods. It was a little bit tiring for us (from Melaka) to travel, but it was a great experience! Of course, it is also excited to meet new friends (student chefs from Berjaya group at KL)!!! Stay tune for the next two posts regarding on the Penang must visit restaurant! =D
